2024 Question and Answer With Haunted Red Mill

Home » Blog » New Jersey Haunts: An In Depth Look

NewJerseyHauntedHouses.com recently sat down with Gina Sampaio of Haunted Red Mill, to discuss what's new at Haunted Red Mill for the 2024 Halloween Season!

What's new at Haunted Red Mill for 2024? Do you have any new rides, attractions, or special features that Haunt Seekers should know about?

We can't reveal all of the new scares and frights we've added on . . . let's suffice it to say, watch out for unidentified frightening--and flying--objects this year!

What are you most excited about for the 2024 Halloween Season?

Four full weekends of Haunted!

What differentiates Haunted Red Mill from other local haunts in New Jersey?

We are a 100% volunteer led undertaking from the concept and design to implementation, make-up, acting and tear down. Proceeds go to the Red Mill Museum Village, a nonprofit historic museum site and an iconic symbol of Hunterdon County and New Jersey.

How long has Haunted Red Mill been in business? Can you tell us a bit more about Haunted Red Mill's history?

We started thirty-four years ago as a 25 cent hayride. It was meant to be a fundraiser and family-friendly community event. It's still those things (though we recommend kids stick to our Saturday morning Happy Haunt events) but has grown exponentially.

What's your favorite experience since opening Haunted Red Mill?

Watching adults getting frightened by a scare actor while still just standing in line and go running off the line, off the site, across the bridge and into the town of Clinton, screaming the entire way.

If we see someone exiting the event and smiling, crying, screaming or laugh we feel that we’ve done our job. It was an enjoyable experience.

How long is a typical haunt experience at Haunted Red Mill from start to finish?

Approximately 45 minutes.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how scary would you say Haunted Red Mill is? Why?

10 OF COURSE. We have 10 acres entirely used for this attraction. It has 5-6 distinct scare areas, with different scares. We are going to get you somewhere along the way. WE GET EVERYONE.

Does Haunted Red Mill's property have any real haunted history? Do you have a spooky encounter you'd like to share?

We have been featured on "Ghost Hunters" and have had many paranormal groups come. They all agree the activity is high here. A favorite encounter--back when the mill's third floor was open to the public, many visitors would comment on how accurate our costumed reenactor was.

We didn't have one.

What inspired you to open up a haunted attraction? What's your favorite part of the business?

It started as a novel fundraising idea. Now our favorite is the community--from the volunteers who return every year and have become one another's friends and family to the local teens who attend as a rite of passage.

How has new technology (i.e. animatronics, special props, etc) helped you to enhance Haunted Red Mill?

Our team travels to conferences every year to stay updated on all the latest technology, makeup, props, etc. We've come a long way since those first hay rides.

Can Haunted Red Mill accommodate large groups? How many people can experience Haunted Red Mill together as a group?

In the first of our many haunted spaces, groups are limited to 6-8 people as it is dark and tight. After that though larger groups can reconvene for the haunted hayride, etc.

Does Haunted Red Mill offer any special deals, discounts, or coupons?

We are offering "Dinner & a Haunt" (spend $50+ at any Clinton restaurant and bring your same-day receipt for a Speed Pass upgrade) as well as $5 off general admission ticket for students or active military with valid ID.

Anything else you'd like to let us know about Haunted Red Mill?

All proceeds support our historic Red Mill Museum Village. Thank you!
